toy studio is a London-based design collective with a desire to create interesting and original pieces across the fields of art, architecture and design. Founded in 2016 by Innes Shelley and Toby Plunkett, our working practice is developed through the use of digital tools for analysis, form generation and fabrication. We share an innate desire to create, craft and champion ideas that share stories and new experiences. With a strong belief in a collaborative method to generate and develop innovative projects with clients and networks of creative practitioners, they welcome both challenges and opportunities.
What we do:
We use parametric tools to achieve designs based on mathematical rules and scientific systems - similar to natural processes. These parametric models can simultaneously combine and respond to a design and its programmic factors; such as form, size, scale, multiplicity, as well as performance sensitive site decisions, and constraints. Many of our artistic studies have been inspired through a range of different ideas, from mathematical and natural processes, to structural systems or simply a pattern or geometry that we found fascinating.
Every project we undertake is unique. Our intention is to design site-specific works which respond intelligently to its environment and its purpose. For the most part we look to subvert standard, readily available materials and objects and through innovative manufacturing techniques and imaginative applications, use them in ways which create interesting and exciting works which blur the boundaries of art, sculpture and architecture.
